Office Potlucks: Do’s and Don’ts

A well-planned office potluck can boost morale, build connections, and break up the usual lunch routine. But without a little structure, it can also turn into a chaotic buffet of six pasta salads and no forks. Whether you’re planning your first potluck or a seasoned casserole carrier, here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep things smooth, inclusive, and fun.

DO: Create a Sign-Up Sheet

Avoid duplicates and missing essentials by organizing a sign-up list in advance. Divide it into categories like mains, sides, drinks, desserts, and supplies. Bonus points for creating a shared doc where everyone can note what they’re bringing.

DON’T: Show Up Empty-Handed

Even if cooking isn’t your thing, pitch in with something–drinks, napkins, utensils, or a store-bought dessert. Potlucks are about shared effort, not culinary perfection.

DO: Consider Dietary Restrictions

Label your dish and note if it’s vegetarian, gluten-free, nut-free, etc. It helps everyone make informed choices and feel included. And if you’re unsure, a quick label like “contains dairy” goes a long way.

DON’T: Bring Anything Too Messy or Smelly

Save the tuna casserole or spicy chili for another time. Stick to dishes that are easy to transport, serve, and eat in an office setting. Think low-drip, low-odor, and ideally low-maintenance.

DO: Keep Food Safety in Mind

Use insulated carriers or coolers for items that need temperature control. If you’re reheating something, make sure it reaches a safe temperature. And don’t forget to wash your hands before setting up or serving.

DON’T: Forget the Cleanup

Everyone loves a potluck, but no one loves the aftermath. Stick around to help clean up, throw out leftovers, and reset the breakroom. It’s part of the deal and keeps the event from becoming a burden on one person.
