Five Steps to an Eco-Friendly Office

As we begin 2020, many businesses will be making a New Year’s resolution of going green. Follow these five steps to make your office more eco-friendly and efficient.

  1. Start a “Going Green” Office Squad

In order to accomplish more and start an open dialogue around sustainability in your workplace, a crucial first step is to start a team dedicated to creating projects and educating the rest of the staff on the best and most effective ways to go green. Some examples of projects for the group could be: 1) to encourage the whole company to start recycling more by placing recycling bins in the breakroom and restroom 2) hosting lunch and learn sessions to expand company-wide knowledge. Learning from your colleagues is a much more powerful tool than simply receiving memos from management.

  2. Start Monthly “Green Challenges”

Everyone enjoys some friendly competition, so creating a monthly challenge is a fun way of working as an office to become more eco-friendly. For example, encourage employees to start collecting items at home, outside and in the office that can be recycled and reused. Whoever collects the most items wins a fun, small prize.

  3. Bring in a Desk Plant

It may sound simple, but bringing in a desk plant can be a great reminder of exactly why going green is so important. Not only will it bring some nature into the office, but plants also produce more oxygen in the air. Long gone are the days of dreary desks and seeing some plants around the office will also be sure to boost employee happiness and productivity.

  4. Make the Most of Natural Light

Going green is also about making the most of what the environment has to offer. Maximizing the use of natural light is a great way to save energy. Furthermore, employees who sit next to sunlit windows have a 15% higher production rate!

  5. Encourage Employees to Take Part in “Green Commuting”

A great way for everyone in the company to give back to our earth is by encouraging employees to walk, bike or carpool to work rather than each of them driving in individually. Other options include taking public transit, working from home and reducing air travel for business trips.

It’s important to remember that small changes have the power to make a big impact. Start off the new year by going green and watch your company transform as they enjoy the benefits.
