As a new year approaches, people often are looking to set new year’s resolutions. Instead of resolutions, let’s talk about commitments. A commitment to making your health a priority in the new year. Between work, kids, chores around the house, yardwork, visiting with friends and family, etc., focusing on our health often gets pushed to the bottom of the list. Here are some tips to finally put your health first.
Find Your Passion: If the thought of going to a gym every day before work sounds like a chore to you, then that is not in line with your interests. Instead, maybe you like cooking and would be open to trying a new healthy meal every week. Or maybe hiking, yoga, or swimming is more your thing. Whatever health and wellness activity you decide to incorporate into your life on a regular basis, make sure it is something you enjoy.
Keep It Simple: When you reflect on what you want to change in your life, sometimes it seems like you have to change everything. Having too many things you want to change can quickly become overwhelming. It might be best to pick 1-2 small health goals for the year. This may allow you to make those small goals a priority in your daily life.
Focus On Yourself Every Day: Finding time to eat healthy, exercise and sleep more every day takes commitment. To make this commitment more manageable, schedule your day out with time to focus on you and your health. A little planning goes a long way to help ensure you have the time you need to get and stay healthy.
When you make your health a priority, many pieces of your life may naturally fall in line with that goal. Start slow, take it one step at a time, and most important, enjoy the journey.
