How to Multitask Like a Pro

Last month we asked if you tend to multitask when in online meetings. The overwhelming majority of you said you typically are doing two things at once, while a small group indicated that they occasionally multitask, and the minority stating that they try not to, but their mind tends to wander. Wherever you fall on this list, have no fear! Here are some of the best ways to multitask like a pro and get your work done efficiently.

Set Realistic Goals

While it can be easy to say yes to multiple projects, it’s important to be mindful of your time and set realistic goals. Be sure to only take on certain projects at once. This will help you to plan your schedule in accordance with deadlines and important meetings. For example, if you feel like your productivity caps out at around 2-3 big projects a month, limit the amount you take on accordingly. This will allow you to multitask effectively and set yourself up for success in the future.

Write Lists

If you’re multitasking at work, it’s probably because you have a multitude of assignments to complete. Start your day by writing a list of everything you hope to accomplish that day. Next, prioritize the most important task to the least important. That way, you’ll be able to get the critical things done on time and won’t leave work at the end of the day worrying about important tasks you didn’t complete.

Don’t Rush Yourself

It can be easy to feel the need to rush through assignments when you have deadlines encroaching, but it’s important to remember that the quality of your work is what will help you achieve success. If you find yourself scrambling to get things done on time, perhaps it’s time to reconfigure your goals and schedule to allow more time in the future.

Give Yourself Breaks

When working on multiple assignments, it can be easy to forget to take breaks throughout the day. That being said, taking breaks can actually be a helpful tool when it comes to boosting productivity and returning to your work refreshed. Consider carving out 5-10 minutes every two hours to walk around, stretch your legs, grab a cup of coffee or a snack, and reset. When you return to work, you’ll be able to jump back in with renewed energy and determination.
