How To Start Your Own Indoor Garden

Ever wanted to grow your own plants, fruits, or vegetables, but didn’t have the outdoor space to do so? With some light and vertical space, you can start an indoor garden. According to garden.org, interest in food gardening has grown since 2008, with six million more homeowners growing their own food in home and community gardens. Whether you live in a studio or a four-bedroom house, here’s some advice to start your own indoor garden.

Start Off Simple

You’ll want to start off with flowers and plants that are low maintenance. Consider heading to your local gardening store and picking up seeds. If you eat yogurt, you can wash out the inside of the containers and use them to store the seeds and potting mix. Aloe, shamrocks, English ivy, and fiddle-leaf figs are great starters.

Decide on a Location

When you first plant your seeds, you’ll want to assess the warmth of a location within your home. Once your seedlings break through the soil, you’ll want to place them in a well-lit area. For plants that need an immense amount of light, consider adding artificial lighting to help them grow.

Water Correctly

Many first-time gardeners tend to over-water their plants, causing the seeds to be soaked. Ensure that you have drainage holes to help water seep down into the seeds. If your soil has the consistency of a washcloth that has been wrung out, you’re usually giving plants the right amount of water.

Fruits & Vegetables

Green beans, kale, and mushrooms are three relatively easy foods to grow. Green beans can yield numerous crops within a short span of time. Place them in a sunny window and keep the soil moist. Kale sprouts can usually grow within one week. They should be placed not too close to each other, as they require a decent amount of room for growth. Mushrooms need darker rooms with higher humidity levels.
