When designing an office, artificial intelligence can create an immense range of designs for the company to use. Programmers can narrow the choices down by filling in certain criteria, such as cost and space. AI can even design offices based around the goals the company wants to accomplish.
This is known as “generative design,” and it was conceived by David Benjamin, founder of the design studio The Living.
Understanding the Needs of Employees
When AI is putting together a potential design for the office, it can set things up in a way that will meet the needs of employees. Given the proper input, AI can adjust the proposed office design to suit an employee’s interests. For example, if a certain employee likes to have a good amount of lighting, AI can adjust the office layout to make sure that employee gets better lighting.
By incorporating data from every employee, AI can design an office that makes most of the workers happy.
Suggestions for Future Design Improvements
One benefit that artificial intelligence has over a traditional designer is that it can quickly adapt old designs to fit with new projects. By giving AI data from older projects, it can quickly draft a new design that incorporates any additional suggestions that are added.
In addition, AI can make suggestions for further improvements to the design after the office is finished. For example, if someone doesn’t like the placement of a particular piece of furniture, AI can draft new ideas as to where it could be moved.
The Technology is Still Developing
Artificial intelligence does have the ability to revolutionize office design, but at this point in time, the technology cannot do everything perfectly. One issue is that not every piece of data associated with office design can be properly transferred to AI. Sometimes AI needs help from an actual architect in order to make a decision on a potential office layout.
Another consideration is that AI cannot always make judgements on its own, as it typically needs additional data to make further decisions. Humans can make their own judgements, but AI needs to be fed more data to make effective choices.
This technology will not replace traditional architects and designers anytime soon, but it could become a vital tool for designers in the future.
