Staying Productive During Snow Days

Even though snow may prevent you from getting to the office, this might not mean that you can take the entire day off. Snow days provide you with an opportunity to work from home, which can actually benefit your productivity. Here is some advice to help you benefit from the frightful weather outside.

Parents: Keep Your Kids Away!

Establish a separate space for your work. You can let children know to be quiet by placing a sign outside of the room you are working in, or let your kids know of your schedule ahead of time. Consider spending your lunch break eating with your children and the rest of your family.

Communication is Key

According to a study by Wrike, 37 percent of employees feel that a lack of communication is a challenge when working remotely. If you are a manager, ensure that you have given your team clear marching orders, and also let them know how they can get in touch with you.  At times, you could lose power if the snowstorm is severe. Ensure that you have multiple points of contact for each of your team members, so just in case you can’t reach them by e-mail, you can still call or text them.

Develop a Game Plan

As tempting as it might be to turn on SportsCenter or your favorite morning news shows while you’re starting the day, take the time to come up with a plan for the entire day and then get to work. Prioritize two or three tasks that need to be done, and plan on completing those before doing anything else.

Stick to a Regular Schedule

If you leave the office every day at 6 p.m., then log off at six. Keep to your typical work schedule as much as possible. This also means that you should avoid household chores during your shift, including laundry, dishwashing, and other things you might normally do around your house. Also, wake up at the same time you normally would for work, and give yourself a little extra time if you need to clear the driveway, and to unwind a little before the day begins. You deserve it!
