Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we’ve gathered a list of five fun activities to get your family talking about more than the bird this year. Check out our suggestions and make your Thanksgiving memorable and meaningful for everyone.
1. Hold Your Own Turkey Trot
It’s not uncommon for communities around the U.S. to host their own Turkey Trots for the Thanksgiving holiday. If you don’t have one in your neighborhood, or perhaps want to add another one to the mix, then creating your own Turkey Trot is the way to go. Map out a route and a time before you invite all your neighbors and family to join in on the fun! The adults can run off some of those tasty calories and the kids can burn some energy.
2. Interview Older Relatives
One of the most incredible gifts we have is being able to hear the stories of our older relatives. Not only have they lived through more history and witnessed some major events in their lifetimes, but they also hold the key to some of the funniest and most embarrassing family stories. Make an audio or video recording of each interview and save them for the years to come. Years from now, you’ll be able to relive those precious family moments.
3. Let Kids Help with the Meal
From creating a “mocktail” station to using the salad spinner, kids can have just as much fun as the adults. Gather a variety of fruit juices, sodas and seltzers along with some garnishes such as orange, maraschino cherries or mint. The kids will come up with their best concoctions and can even hold a contest for the adults to pick the best one. By the time the competition is over, everyone will be laughing and ready to eat.
4. Set Up A Scavenger Hunt
What’s great about a scavenger hunt? It’s fun for people of all ages. Write up a list of items and hand everyone some baskets. Divide into teams and make it as competitive as you want. Another Fun Tip: Add in some random rewards to keep things interesting. At three or four stations along the way, accompany the clues with prizes and little items to reward your scavenger hunters.
5. Nap/Rest Time
One of the best parts about Thanksgiving is undoubtedly the nap that occurs after the big meal. No matter who you are, everyone will be ready for a light snooze after so much delicious eating. A good way to settle down is to host a story time or try playing some relaxing music or a holiday movie to help unwind before getting back to the fun!
