What Genre of Music Best Fits Your Mood?

Music can tend to have a profound effect on the mind and body. Think of a song that gives you goosebumps or makes you feel a certain way. Is it because the song reminds you of an event? Music can cause various reactions. Here are a few suggestions of what you should listen to based on your mood.

Happy

According to a study conducted by the Journal of Positive Psychology, listening to upbeat music during a difficult time can improve your mood and boost happiness in just two weeks. Listen to music with a catchy beat or with lyrics. Don’t be afraid to break out those guilty pleasure songs, too. Pop music can be great to listen to when you are feeling happy.

Sad

Music can be very therapeutic when you feel upset. Consider listening to something that has piano in it or an acoustic guitar. Artists like Adele, Sarah McLachlan, and Coldplay are great for unwinding after a rough day. Try to avoid rock music or anything aggressive as it could transition your feelings towards anger.

Tired

If you have ever had a baby, chances are you sang or played a lullaby. So, why not listen to some soothing music before you fall asleep. Consider listening to classical or jazz music about 45 minutes before sleeping. If you find those too distracting and you have a smartphone, White Noise is a great app that allows you to choose between different sounds, from an air conditioner hum to ocean waves.

Angry

Sometimes, you might feel the need to just let it all out. Hip-Hop or Metal are good options for those days where your blood is about to boil. Keep in mind that you will only want to listen to a few songs before choosing something else to calm yourself down.

Still Not Sure What to Listen To?

Spotify has curated playlists based on over 20 different moods, along with genre specific playlists. Another website called MoodFuse can narrow down your music selection based on your current mood and the genre you’re most interested in.
